Organisational Design Fundamentals


A highly interactive course equipping practitioners with practical tools and examples; enabling understanding as to how organisational effectiveness  can be attained and sustained through systemic organisational design.

Participants will gain knowledge about the foundation, and the basic principles, of systemic organisation design and through the analysis of several case studies, will learn how to positively impact organisational effectiveness by applying these principles.


For HR professionals, Transformation Managers, Business Leaders, companies, groups and individuals who are driving organisational change.


A 1-day course, tutor led remotely via TEAMS or also face-to-face either on company premises or in OrgHACK facilities in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Module 1: Understanding Organisation Design

Delve into the foundational aspects of organisation design, exploring its historical evolution and contemporary theories. Gain a comprehensive understanding of why organisation design is crucial for organisational success. Learn to distinguish between systemic organisation design and structure-focused approaches to initiate effective change within organisations.

Advanced Organisation Design For Practitioners

A highly interactive course equipping leaders and practitioners who are driving change with the basic understanding of the organisation design foundation and principles; exploring how leadership and support for organisation design practitioners can make or break transformation initiatives.

Participants will build on the foundation module and learn how "to do" organisation design by practising using several case studies.  Participants can also bring their own live cases into the learning environment should they wish to do so. 


For experienced HR practitioners and leaders and managers of teams or departments or functions looking to upskill their organisation design capabilities. 

A 3-day course, tutor led remotely via TEAMS or face-to-face either on company premises or in OrgHACK facilities located in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The "Advanced Organisation Design for Practitioners" course consists of the foundation module which is essential for setting the groundwork and also includes two additional modules: "Doing Organisation Design and Development" and "Change Management in Organisation Design."


Participants delve into a holistic operating model approach, learning to scope and prioritize design goals, conduct feasibility assessments, and manage change initiatives. By integrating organisational theory principles and honing pactical skills through case studies, participants emerge ready to lead successful organisational change initiatives, sustain newly implemented designs post go-live, and ensure continual alignment with strategic objectives. 

Participants have the flexibility to complete modules sequentially or flexibly to suit their availability and learning pace.


Module 2: Doing Organisation Design and Development

Dive into the practical aspects of organisation design and development. Learn essential techniques to address key organisational challenges and root causes. Gain skills to drive effective organisational change, from defining goals to conducting feasibility assessments.


Learning Objectives:

1.     Apply the Holistic Operating Model Approach: Utilise a holistic approach to identify challenges and root causes.

2.     Scope, Prioritise, Set, and Plan Organisation Design Goals: Define and prioritise goals aligned with strategies.

3.     Diagnose, Assess, and Analyse Organisation Setups: Utilise quantitative and qualitative data to diagnose setups.

4.     Develop Organisation Design Principles and Criteria: Develop principles considering ethical and legal considerations.

5.     Develop Organisation Design Hypotheses/Options: Generate and evaluate hypotheses integrating insights.

6.     Identify Connections between Organisational Components: Recognise and establish connections between components.

7.     Conduct Feasibility Assessment: Conduct assessments of proposed solutions.


Module 3: Change Management in Organisation Design

Focus on critical aspects of change management in implementing and following up on organisational design initiatives. Gain insights into pre-implementation planning, effective change management activities, and sustaining new designs post go-live.


Learning Objectives:

1.     Understand the Need for Pre-Implementation and Change Management Planning: Recognise the importance of thorough planning.

2.     Outline Change Management Activities and Plan for Organisation Readiness and Transition

3.     Know how to Sustain, Review, and Update the New Design Post Go-Live

4.     Apply Relevant Items from the List: Integrate principles to ensure coherent change management.

5.     Utilise project management skills.

6.     Consider ethical and legal considerations.
